BNS: TAP Portugal to launch Lisbon-Tallinn flights in summer

The Portuguese carrier TAP Portugal is set to start flying between Lisbon and Tallinn in the summer of 2014.

With the launch of Tallinn-Lisbon flights by TAP Portugal several destinations in South Africa and Africa will become better available, spokespeople for Tallinn Airport told BNS.

"We've been long waiting for the moment to be able to tell the good news about the opening of a new route. Now that TAP Portugal has made us a Christmas gift in announcing the opening of the new route we can say it out too that after long negotiations we reached an agreement with TAP Portugal under which Lisbon-Tallinn flights will start in summer," Tallinn Airport board member Erik Sakkov said.

He added that the exact launch date will be announced along with the flight plan by the carrier in the coming few days.

The board member of Tallinn Airport described the opening of the new route as a long-awaited opportunity representing a significant investment in the Estonian economy through bringing tourists here and expanding opportunities for trade and exports for Estonian businesses on the South American market.

Sakkov said the addition of TAP Portugal to the pool of airlines serving flights to Tallinn would open up the possibility for people here to reach the Azores, Madeira, Cabo Verde, Brazil and many other interesting destinations changing plane only once. It will also be significantly easier to fly to the Football World Cup from Estonia.

At 3,314 kilometers, the flight to Lisbon is the longest regular flight ever operated out of Tallinn. The new route will be operated with planes of the A320 family, or A319, A320 and A 321, and the approximate flight time will be five hours.

The Portuguese national airline TAP Portugal at present operates 76 routes to 34 countries using 71 aircraft.
