Estonia opened its first honorary consulate in Madeira



On February 10, the Estonian Ambassador to Portugal, Andres Rundu opened the Estonian Honorary Consulate in Funchal, the capital of the the autonomous region of Madeira. The Estonian honorary consul in Funchal is Fernando Faria de Catanho.

At the opening of the honorary consulate, the ambassador noted that the number of Estonian tourists arriving in Madeira has grown steadily. Consequently, the need for consular assistance has also increased and the newly appointed honorary consul will now be able to provide assistance for those in need.

At the opening, the honorary consul stressed the wish to contribute to the strengthening of ties between Estonia and Portugal, especially in the areas of tourism, the economy and culture. The Madeira regional government representative pointed out in his speech that when the Republic of Estonia celebrates its 100th anniversary and the holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, 600 years will have passed since the discovery of Madeira, and the two seaside countries could celebrate these milestones by organising a common cultural event.

The opening reception was attended by the President of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, Tranquada Gomes, Jesus Eduardo, who is responsible for economic, tourism and cultural affairs in the Madeira regional government, the President of the Madeira Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Cristina Pedra and Paulo Cafôfo, the Mayor of Funchal. This was followed by the opening of a photo exhibition introducing Estonia at the Funchal City Theatre.

The Estonian honorary consul in Funchal, Fernando Faria de Catanho was born in 1974 and in addition to Portuguese, speaks English and Spanish. He is a graduate of the Lisbon Autonomous University in International Business Administration and Lusíada University in economics. The new honorary consul manages the real estate firm Barreto, Daniel & Fernando, and is active in the administration of the regional offices of the Ministry of Justice.

Other Estonian honorary consulates in Portugal are located in Porto, Taviras, and Ponta Delgada.
